The heart of the village sits on the Ammer, at the foot of the Kofel. Along the Dorfstraße stand the houses decorated with Lüftlmalerei, the traditional Bavarian façade painting, led by the famous Pilatushaus. Many of these houses have been in the same family for generations; some now belong to a community of heirs (Erbengemeinschaft). Around the Passion Play Theater (Passionstheater) and toward the Ettaler Straße, the village gets younger: small apartment complexes, vacation rentals, houses from the postwar decades. And in the neighborhood around the train station, where the Ammergaubahn runs to Murnau every hour, you’ll also find our office.

Besides the main village, there is only one other official district, the hamlet of Sankt Gregor. That makes Oberammergau compact, with almost everything within walking distance. Woodcarving here has had its own guild rules since 1563, and the woodcarving school still trains apprentices today. You can see it in the workshops, in the carved figures on the houses and in a village that takes craftsmanship seriously.
