Until 1919, the town was called Unterpeißenberg. That year it was renamed and granted market-town status. By then, coal mining had long been the heart of the town; it began in the 19th century and did not end until 1971. The mining museum (Bergwerksmuseum) and the miners’ memorial chapel (Knappengedächtniskapelle) recall this era.

Two train stations sit on the line to Weilheim. The town is known for the Leonhardifahrt procession in late October, the 15th-century chapel of St. Georg and the ice hockey of TSV Peißenberg. The Baroque painter Matthäus Günther was born here.
