The name Farchant goes back to Forchheida, the pine heath. The village is first mentioned between 791 and 802, and until 1803 it belonged to the Prince-Bishops of Freising. The Loisach flows from south to north through the municipality, and to the east the Estergebirge rises to over 2,000 meters at the Bischof.
“Since the tunnel, the village has been noticeably quieter.”
Since 2000, the B2 federal highway has bypassed the village through the 2.4-kilometer Farchant Tunnel. Since then, the village has been noticeably quieter. Houses in the main village and in the eastern district of Mühldörfl are popular with families who want to live close to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Many properties come on the market through inheritances.
Around 3,600 people live in Farchant. The traditional costume association (Volkstrachtenverein) has existed since 1913, the TSV sports club has over 1,200 members, and a new maypole is raised every four years.
