On September 30, 1966, the last shift went down into the Penzberg mine. After some 170 years of coal, the town, which had received its town charter in 1919, faced a fresh start. It came in 1970 on the former mine site in the Nonnenwald. Today more than 7,700 people work there for Roche Diagnostics, the largest employer in the region.

The center of town is the Stadtplatz, redesigned in 2013, with its Eselsbrunnen fountain. The Museum Penzberg shows the Campendonk collection. Around the center lie the miners’ settlements with their small houses and large gardens, which are now popular with families and with buyers looking to modernize.
Penzberg, with just over 17,000 residents, also includes the church village of Sankt Johannisrain and villages such as Johannisberg, Maxkron, Reindl, Heinz and Wölfl. The Kochelseebahn runs hourly to Munich, and the A95 autobahn is just a few kilometers away. Demand for rental apartments is correspondingly high.
