In 1147, Welf VI founded a Premonstratensian monastery in Steingaden. The Welfenmünster of 1176 is today the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist. The secularization of 1803 ended monastic life, but the village remained shaped by the monastery, and there is still a monastery museum today.

Steingaden is famous worldwide for the Wieskirche, built by the Zimmermann brothers between 1746 and 1754. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands in the middle of the church village of Wies. Like Urspring, Wies is one of 53 official districts, most of them hamlets and remote farmsteads. There are few apartments here, but there are farms, houses and agricultural land.
Just under 3,000 people live in the municipality, which was formed from three municipalities in 1939. The B17 federal highway runs north to south through the village, and in summer the Bergbus shuttle runs up to the Wieskirche. Anyone who wants to sell or repurpose a property here almost always has to clarify the building rights for land outside the built-up area (Außenbereich).
