In 1689, Matthias Klotz founded violin making in Mittenwald. It grew into Germany’s most important center for string and plucked instruments, with a violin-making museum and, since 1858, a state school for musical instrument making. The violin maker’s monument stands in front of the parish church St. Peter und Paul, whose painted tower defines the townscape.
