Schongau lay on the trade route between Verona, Augsburg and Nuremberg. In 1331, Emperor Ludwig granted the town its own charter and the right to mint coins. The 14th-century town wall once had five gates and 16 towers, and large parts of it survive today. After a fire in 1493, the upper town was rebuilt by 1514.

In the old town above the Lech lie the Marienplatz, the Münzstraße and the Ballenhaus, once a warehouse and seat of administration. The parish church Mariä Himmelfahrt is decorated with frescoes by Matthäus Günther. Below the old town and in the newer areas stand townhouses and apartment complexes.
Just under 12,700 people live in Schongau, which apart from the town itself includes only the hamlet of Dornau. Major employers such as the UPM paper mill, Hoerbiger, Hirschvogel and Hochland drive demand for apartments. The Pfaffenwinkelbahn runs to Weilheim, and Peiting is right across the Lech.
