Bad Tölz is first mentioned in 1155 as Tolnze, and in 1331 it was granted market rights. After the great fire of 1453, the Marktstraße was rebuilt. With its painted façades, it still runs down the hillside to the Isar and is the heart of the town.

In 1846, Kaspar Riesch discovered Germany’s strongest iodine springs. In 1899 Tölz became a spa (Bad), and in 1906 a town. West of the Isar, the spa quarter (Badeteil) grew up with its villas from the spa era, many of which are now divided into condominiums. Above the town rises the Kalvarienberg, and to the south the Blomberg.
Just under 19,700 people live in Bad Tölz. All districts apart from the town center come from the former municipality of Kirchbichl, incorporated in 1978: the parish village of Ellbach, the church village of Kirchbichl and a number of hamlets. The town is known for the Leonhardifahrt procession, the Tölzer Knabenchor boys’ choir and an ice hockey tradition dating back to 1928.
