Peiting is first mentioned in 1055 as a castle seat of the Welf dynasty, and in 1438 it was granted market rights. In the 20th century, coal mining shaped the town: in 1957, 882 miners worked here, and in 1968 the mine closed. Many solid miners’ houses with gardens date from this era.
