Between 1908 and 1914, Gabriele Münter, Wassily Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej Jawlensky came to Murnau again and again. The town became an important meeting place in the prehistory of the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) movement. The Münter-Haus still stands today, and anyone who looks out across the Murnauer Moos toward the Wetterstein range understands why.

The Moos is the largest contiguous moorland in Central Europe. On the other side lies Lake Staffelsee.
